June 4, 2025
This year’s finalists shortlisted for the Sobey Art Award are Hangama Amiri, Swapnaa Tamhane, Sandra Brewster, Chukwudubem Ukaigwe, Tania Willard and Tarralik Duffy. Working in a broad range of media, the six artists “embody the incredible breath and dynamic spirit of contemporary Canadian art. Their diverse practices, spanning from drawings to textiles and multidisciplinary installations offer vital insights into issues of place, identity, community, and belonging, challenging us to imagine new possibilities for art and for our shared future,” comments Jonathan Shaughnessy, Director of Curatorial Initiatives and Chair of the 2025 Sobey Award Jury. The 2025 Sobey Art Award exhibition opens at the National Gallery of Canada on 3 October.
Funded by the Sobey Art Foundation and organized by the National Gallery of Canada, the Award was founded in 2002 and features artists from six regions – Atlantic, Quebec, Ontario, Prairies, Pacific and Circumpolar – and the finalists are selected from a longlist of 30 nominees.
