Sandra Brewster

“Anywhere Everywhere”

Musee d’art Rouyn Noranda, Quebec

January 27 – April 30, 2023

Daughter of Guyanese parents, Sandra Brewster is a Canadian artist based in Toronto. Her work focuses on the establishment of the Caribbean community in the Canadian metropolis and, more generally, on the representation of Blacks in the public space in North America.

Recognized for her work of transferring photographs directly onto the walls of art galleries, Sandra Brewster establishes a close correspondence between this technique and the establishment of a person in their host country. The image, inverted, imperfect, a little blurred, suggests the transformation of an individual transiting from his culture of origin to that of the host society.

The Anywhere Everywhere exhibition presents works developed over a decade. The production of a typical portrait repeated in a series that Sandra Brewster will call The Smiths has repercussions in her most recent production. In this series of portraits, faces sporting the “Afro” haircut are made up of collages made with the pages of the telephone book devoted to people named Smith. Each character stands out as both an entity and a crowd of undifferentiated individuals. These works raise a reflection on the visibility of Blacks in the North American public space at the same time as they are a vibrant update.
