In 2009, I took a photograph of a pile of cut-up and shredded photos of my work. This became the first in the Reconfigurations series, a body of work that involves a physical process usually invisible in my finished pieces, where hand and gesture are hidden. In reshuffling my archive, I discovered how the history of my own work runs parallel to developments in technology and how the passage of time is embedded in each. To me, these images of free-floating strands, fragments and particles are clues to encoded data now rendered inaccessible and silent.
Once, I saw, from the first lines of The Little Prince, is part of a neon series begun in 2006 where colour is perceived before words emerge from the cursive script. Its deceptive simplicity calls up the viewer’s own archive of images
Glass, light and the dimension of time have been recurring elements in my work since my earliest video and multimedia installations. The themes of collapse and vulnerability – of borders, states and status – run through them along with the inevitability of change. Although it began accidentally, this series seems entirely logical now.
