JOHN BROWN
Solo Exhibition
February 21 – March 21, 2026
panel discussion: Saturday February 21, 1 – 2 pm
opening reception: Saturday February 21, 2 – 5 pm
Drawn from the John Brown Estate and complemented by exceptional works consigned by long-standing patrons, this exhibition brings together a collection of the most compelling paintings remaining in Brown’s oeuvre. Spanning intimate 8-inch panels to monumental canvases over twelve feet wide, the works reveal the full breadth of his singular, archaeological process: painstaking layers of oil applied to wood and then scraped away, built up and excavated until image and meaning emerge. Often rooted in the human figure, architecture, and collected ephemera, Brown’s compositions hover between representation and abstraction, their weathered surfaces bearing the visible history of their making. Dense with texture, shadow, and luminous colour, these paintings embody the visceral, bodily act of painting that defined his practice, culminating in what Brown called “the shock of recognition,” the moment when the work finally declared itself complete.
This marks the first solo exhibition of John Brown’s work since his passing in March 2020. We look forward to immersing ourselves once again in the depth, complexity, and quiet intensity of his paintings, and to gathering in the presence of a body of work that continues to resonate with enduring power.
