Angela Grauerholz

Angela Grauerholz was born in Hamburg, West Germany in 1952.
She has lived and worked in Montréal since 1976.

Grauerholz is a graduate of the Kunstschule Alsterdamm in graphic design. She studied literature and linguistics at the University of Hamburg and holds a Master’s degree in photography from Concordia University.

Grauerholz’s work has consistently challenged and redefined the processes of image making. She is known for her dense, dreamlike black and white photographs, her iconic images and more recently, her coloured images and alternate methods of photographic production.

Angela Grauerholz has participated in many international events of distinction including the Biennale of Sydney, Australia (1990), the Documenta IX in Kassel, Germany (1992), and the Carnegie International in Pittsburgh (1995). A touring exhibition of her work, organized by the Musée D’Art Contemporain De Montréal, traveled Canada and Europe in 1995-1996.

In 2006, Grauerholz was awarded Québec’s Prix Paul-Émile Borduas for her work in photography and installation.
